Size Matters
Glassblowers have different needs, we know, and we accommodate by offering blowpipes and punty rods in various sizes, configurations and materials. If you’re unsure about which option will best suit your application, just ask—we’re glad to help. If you need something special, we can make that too.
Cutting Edge pipe and punty heads are hand turned from 309 stainless steel and come in sizes ranging from .625 to 1.5 inches. The size of your work dictates the size of head to choose. For hefty work, choose a hefty- sized head. For lighter work, choose a more delicate size.
We use stainless steel for our pipes and punties (unless you'd like yours made from Chromoly). Our most popular pipes and punties have a wall thickness of .095 inches. This thicker tubing gives us something more substantial to weld to, so the head-to-pipe join is much stronger than in the average tool. Stronger means longer tool life. And thicker walls are more rigid, so the pipes stay straighter longer. We offer pipes in other wall thicknesses as well; .065 inches for light work, or a hefty .120 inches for the largest of pieces.
Choosing pipe and punty rod diameter is the same as choosing tube thickness—for hefty pieces, the larger diameter tubing will make turning easier, and you will have better control. The smaller diameter tubing is for lighter work.
We Never Lose Our Heads
We hear a lot of complaints about cracked heads falling off blowpipes. At Cutting Edge Products we disapprove of this sort of thing. That’s why we triple weld the heads to the bodies. If you want cracked heads you’ll need to go elsewhere; you won’t get them from us.
Made To Order
A red Delrin mouthpiece or punty plug, grip and hang collar come standard on our blowpipes and punty rods. But we aim to please and want to suit your specific needs. Options (available when you select your product) include stainless mouthpieces, knurling and counterweighted punties. Special requests? Just tell us what you want!
